Brazil is too large for a single standard itinerary. Rio de Janeiro can be the right first stop for a city, beaches and mountain views; Salvador and Bahia suit travelers who want Afro-Brazilian history, music and a slower coastal rhythm; the Amazon needs more preparation around flights, boats and the kind of lodge or river route that is actually available. Iguazu is usually an add-on, while Pantanal works for travelers who are ready to build the trip around wildlife and long transfers.

The first decision is how much of Brazil to include. A week is usually enough for one region and perhaps one short extension. Combining Rio, the Amazon, Iguazu and the north-east in the same week creates more airport time than travel time.
